Donald Trump Hush Money Trial: Ex-POTUS Whines About Trial While Campaigning Inside a New York Bodega
The third day of the Donald Trump hush money trial has now concluded. Soon after it ended, he took to his usual whining in front of the media before he began campaigning inside a New York bodega and began whining there all over again.
He chose a bodega in Harlem, which was where a fatal stabbing happened two years ago, to criticize failures in public safety by the city's ruling Democratic Party. He then singled out Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg by name and once again accused him of being soft on crime. He then claimed that the charges Bragg made against him were partisan.
Trump continued blaming Democrats for cities being "crime-ridden," including New York where he was charged with Falsifying Business Records. He also used these claims to attack Democrats in Georgia, especially in Fulton County where he has been charged with Election Interference.
Despite Trump's claims, crime statistics in New York have been steadily going down, with crime rates being down before the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns.
According to ABC News, Trump was in that Harlem, bodega at the invitation of the Bodega Association. Trump has been campaigning on crime and public safety, as well as immigration and getting revenge on his political opponents.
"This is a trial that should have never been brought. ... I should be right now in Pennsylvania, in Florida, in many other states -- North Carolina, Georgia -- campaigning," complained Trump while heading back to court.
Donald Trump Sat and Listened as Potential Jurors Said What They Really Felt About Him
Jury selection continued for the Donald Trump hush money trial in New York, potential jurors were required to say what they really thought of the former president. The testimonies of these everyday people may have gotten Donald Trump out of his echo chamber where he is showered with constant praise from his supporters.
As The Guardian pointed out, the exchanges between the potential jurors and the lawyers for both the prosecution and defense became colorful, with one prosecutor telling the jurors, "Resist the urge to flee the courtroom."
"If we were sitting at a bar, I'd be happy to tell you, but in this room what I feel about President Trump is not important or inherent to either the case you're presenting or you're defending," one potential juror said, trying to avoid disclosing his opinion of the former president. He later conceded that he is a Democrat.
Another potential juror started out by sort of complimenting Trump, saying, "He speaks his mind. Come on: what else can you say about that?" which drew a smile from the former president. However, she continued, "He says what he wants to say, I want to say some things but my mother said, 'Be nice.'"
Donald Trump Confronted With Reality That He Is Not In Charge of the Hush Money Trial
Meanwhile, Axios noted that while Trump is used to swaying the court of public opinion with his die-hard supporters, he is slowly finding out that he cannot always do as he pleases in the court of law, with his face often being marked by "frequent sullen and exasperated expressions in court seem to reflect the reality that he's not in charge anymore."
As the criminal defendant, Trump must attend every day of the trial, including jury selection. Already, he has been scolded several times by Judge Juan Merchan for trying to intimidate a potential juror.
His strongman image also took a hit as reports have noted he had been dozing off not once, but twice, as he was caught dozing off again on the second day, with many pointing out his nickname for rival Joe Biden as "Sleepy Joe" should be for himself, "Sleepy Don."
