The White House has hinted that President Joe Biden would soon be signing a long-anticipated executive order that would result in a border clampdown and migrant limits along the US-Mexico border soon after Congress rejected a bipartisan border deal for the second time after Donald Trump pressured Republicans to vote against it because it would make Biden look good.

According to Politico, this would essentially allow Biden to "shut down" the US-Mexico border should the migrant border crossings currently surge as more and more people try to flee their respective countries to seek a better life in the United States.

Four people familiar with the president's plans have spoken with Politico and stated that Biden is expected to make the executive order around Tuesday, right before he heads to France to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day invasion during World War II.

In that executive order, Biden is expected to use section 212(f) of the Immigration and Nationality Act. This would dramatically limit migrants' ability to seek asylum along the US-Mexico border. However, this would only happen once encounters reach a new threshold.

Biden administration officials have stated that the metric to decide whether or not to shut down the southern border would be around 4,000 daily border crossings. This is expected to show people that Biden is willing to take more action regarding the border.

The executive order would support a bipartisan border security bill tied to giving aid to Ukraine. However, after Republicans killed the bill that they were asking for, Biden took a string of actions in recent weeks to take action on the border after Republicans would not for political reasons.

What Would Joe Biden's Executive Order Regarding the US-Mexico Border Do?

For now, talks are still in progress as to what might be included in the executive order. However, it is expected to speed up the cases of migrants already in the United States and have migrants with criminal records becoming ineligible even faster.

The Biden administration is also considering whether the 4,000 per day migrant limit would also include asylum-seekers with appointments through the CBP One app coming to the border. The Associated Press noted that right now, around 1,450 of these appointments go through each day.

Another measure would have migrants be removed automatically once the migrant limit's threshold has been reached. It would also be a push for migrants seeking asylum to make appointments and use a legal pathway that avoids the costly and dangerous journey,

Border Mayors Already Gathering in Washington, DC Ahead of Joe Biden Border Announcement

Biden has been growing more aggressive on the border after ceaseless criticism from Republicans, and this is shown with this latest move along the border, which has angered many of his own party's progressive base.

However, as he prepares to take on the border issue, at least two Texas border mayors are expected to go to DC during the announcement. They are Brownsville Mayor John Cowen and Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza, both going there at the invitation of Biden, according to ABC News.
