Joe Biden's strict new border clampdown is showing signs that it may be working for now, as the number of migrants caught trying to cross the US-Mexico border has already dropped despite some strong criticisms from both sides of the aisle.

A US Border Patrol official has told Reuters that they found fewer and fewer migrants trying to cross the border since the Biden restrictions were first rolled out, with the official saying that they managed only to arrest approximately 3,100 people crossing illegally. This is around 20% less than the day before.

"It's still too early to say this is a definitive trend," said the CBP official who spoke to the outlet on the condition of anonymity. "But I think it is indicative of some possible early success."

It should be noted that this is still early into the new restrictive policy's implementation, as it is still unknown if this would deter migration to the US-Mexico border in the long run. However, Biden is already working with countries along the migration route such as Mexico and Guatemala to help curb migration.

This new Biden border policy began to take effect on Wednesday, as it sets a migrant crossing limit to 2,500. Once the threshold is reached, all migrants caught illegally crossing the border will be immediately deported and will not have the chance to request asylum.

There are exceptions in the new rule, however, such as ones for unaccompanied minors. There are also exceptions set for migrants who genuinely look afraid of being sent back to their respective countries. However, these migrants will have to face stricter screening methods in order to be allowed in.

Alejandro Mayorkas Says They Are Ready for Challenges to Joe Biden's Border Crackdown

Meanwhile, the Biden administration is already gearing up for possible lawsuits that challenge the restrictive new border policies in court, and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says they are ready for them.

One of these challenges comes from the civil rights group, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which likened the policy to that of Donald Trump's controversial and draconic border policies. Mayorkas noted that he disagrees with their lawsuit.

"I respectfully disagree with the ACLU," the DHS secretary said. "We stand by the legality of what we have done. We stand by the value proposition. It's not only a matter of securing the border, we have a humanitarian obligation to keep vulnerable people out of the hands of exploitative smugglers."

Donald Trump Says He Will Reverse Joe Biden's Strict Border Clampdown Despite Wanting Those Same Policies

Meanwhile, Donald Trump, who is running against Biden in November, has vowed to reverse Biden's policies despite having an even more anti-immigrant rhetoric than him.

"On Day One of my administration, I will be rescinding Crooked Joe's outrageous executive order," he said during a rally, claiming without evidence that it is "pro-invasion, pro-child trafficking... pro-drug dealers," even though the provisions in the Biden executive order say otherwise.

"And I will terminate every single open borders policy of the Biden administration," he added.
