The semi-final matches of the world's oldest soccer tournament, the Copa America, have now been decided as Uruguay eliminated eternal rival Brazil. Meanwhile, the futures of the now-eliminated USMNT and Mexico, once considered North America's strongest teams, are now in question after their group stage eliminations, where Canada surprises everyone by making it to the Final 4 against Argentina.

Uruguay has been hungry as of late, with this being superstar Luis Suarez's final Copa America and many want him to face off against Inter Miami and FC Barcelona teammate, Lionel Messi and defending champions Argentina. However, its quarterfinal match against eternal rival Brazil ended in a 0-0 draw, which meant it had to go to a penalty shootout.

Brazil has been rocked by injuries as its two biggest stars, Neymar and Vinicius Jr., were not able to play. Neymar was out with an injury while Vinicius Jr was suspended. The team did not look like the Brazil of old coming into the match with Uruguay as it struggled to even make it out of the group stage and was even in danger of elimination.

According to Business World, Brazil struggled to create opportunities throughout the match, even though they had a man advantage late in the second half when Uruguay's Nahitan Nandez was sent off. It was scoreless throughout and it had to go to a shootout.

Uruguay won the shootout, which means they will move on to the semis to face Colombia next, as Luis Suarez tries to finally take on his teammate, Messi, in the final. However, it had been a very physical contest, considering there were 41 fouls from both teams.

Canada will face Argentina in the semi-finals, while Uruguay faces Colombia. Canada is the only North American team left.

Mexico Has a Lot of Pondering To Do After Copa America Disaster

Coming into the Copa America, Mexico was seeking some momentum heading into the 2026 World Cup and ending South American dominance in the contest. However, after winning one game against Jamaica, El Tri fizzled out, going from favorites to first-round elimination.

According to The Guardian, however, this was a long time coming, with Ricardo La Volpe, who used to be the team's head coach, predicting that his replacement, Jaime Lozano, would encounter problems if he did not adopt new tactics.

"Jimmy is a coach who changes very little," said the former El Tri coach. "He is not a coach who shows different tactical positions that can help with various ways to attack. He has a lot of work to do to give the players the tools they need."

For now, many experts agree that change is needed for the team, as well as the country's local league.

USMNT Copa America Disaster Has Left Many Wondering What Is Next?

It is not just Mexico that needs soul searching after its Copa America disaster, but also its eternal rival, USA, with the USMNT also failing to reach the next round after exiting the group stage. Like Mexico, the USMNT also came in as one of the favorites and started hot with a win.

Many are now pondering who will be coaching the team next after the Copa America disappointment. Many see Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp as the next coach, possibly leading the squad into the North America World Cup in 2026.

While many want Klopp, other possible candidates include David Wagner, Steve Cherundolo, Wilfried Nancy, and Hugo Perez, according to ESPN.
