Argentina is now two wins away from winning the 2014 World Cup after advancing to the semifinals with a 1-0 win against Belgium in their quarterfinals showdown on Saturday at the Estadio Nacional in Brasilia.

Gonzalo Higuain led Team Argentina to their first semi-final stint in 24 years with an early goal in the eighth minute of the match - a volley that caught Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois off guard.

Argentina's defensive line held on for the entire match, denying Belgium from scoring an equalizing goal until the referee blew the final whistle, signaling the Argentine squad's entry to the final four.

Kevin Mirallas came close to scoring for Belgium in the 42nd minute, but failed to hit his target.

Romelu Lukaku also made a last-ditch effort in the final minute of stoppage time, but was denied again. Axel Witsel tried to follow it up from outside the box, but his shot went too high.

Lionel Messi, who has four goals and one assists in the tournament, failed to score in Saturday's match, but he was heavily involved in several scoring chances for Argentina.

The star forward had a chance to add one goal in stoppage time, but Courtois, who has yet to surrender a goal against Messi in all tournaments, stopped him in his tracks once again.

Argentina will now face either Netherlands or Costa Rica in the World Cup semifinals. Those two teams are set to collide at 4 p.m. EST Saturday at the Arena Fonta Nova in Salvador.
