A rise in violence over the beginning of the long holiday weekend in Chicago killed three people and injured dozens more. According to police reports, 37 individuals have been shot in the city since Thursday afternoon, including the latest fatality, a young man shot by police late Friday in the Portage Park neighborhood.

According to police, officers approached the man around 10 p.m. on North Cicero Avenue when they saw "an object protruding from his waistband." The man began running from the scene, pointing a revolver at pursuing officers.

"He takes his left hand and pulls something out from under his arm, put it in his right hand and starts to turn," Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said. "He's got a .44 magnum with a 8- to 10-inch barrel."

Police fired at and killed the man, "the third police-involved shooting in 18 hours," according to NBC Chicago.

The first shooting took place at 4 p.m. Thursday when two 21-year-old women were shot in the East Garfield Park neighborhood. One was fatally shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was shot in the arm, police said.

On Friday, one man was killed and another wounded in a shooting outside a strip mall at 63rd Street and Damen Avenue. According to police, the two men were standing outside when a black vehicle pulled up and opened fire. A 35-year-old man was rushed to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he is in critical condition, according to Janel Sedevic, Chicago Police news affairs officer. Another man, 34, was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Area South detectives are investigating the shootings. At least 21 others were wounded in shootings between Friday night and early Saturday.
