Ben Affleck is the New Batman; 50,000 Protest through Online Petition
Ben Affleck will play the Caped Crusader in Zack Snyder's upcoming sequel to the 2013 hit "Man of Steel", Warner Bros. confirmed Thursday. However, it seems like Batman fans aren't too happy with it.
The announcement was met with lots of protests and complaints on the internet. In fact, an ongoing online petition was created to have Affleck removed from the upcoming movie. As of this writing, the petition created by John Roden has already reached 50,000 signatures.
According to Roden, the appeal does not seek to harm Affleck or his career; however, he feels that the former Daredevil actor is not the right fit for the role.
"His acting skill is not even close to being believable as Bruce Wayne and he won't do the role justice. He's not built, nor is he intimidating enough for the role of Batman," the creator wrote in his appeal. "His portrayal of Daredevil was atrocious and he's not remotely close to an action star. Please find someone else.
"I would like to add that this petition was not meant in any way to harm Ben Affleck or his career. I respect Affleck's work; I just feel he is inappropriate for the role," Roden added.
On the other hand, Snyder feels differently and believes that Affleck will do a good job in playing the role of Batman in the upcoming movie that will put the Caped Crusader and Superman together.
"Ben provides an interesting counter-balance to Henry's Superman," the director said in the press release, according to Celebuzz. "He has the acting chops to create a layered portrayal of a man who is older and wiser than Clark Kent and bears the scars of a seasoned crime fighter, but retain the charm that the world sees in billionaire Bruce Wayne. I can't wait to work with him."
According to Inside Movies, Warner Bros. Executive Greg Silverman also agrees with Snyder's choice.
"We knew we needed an extraordinary actor to take on one of DC Comics' most enduringly popular Super Heroes, and Ben Affleck certainly fits that bill, and then some. His outstanding career is a testament to his talent and we know he and Zack will bring new dimension to the duality of this character," said Silverman in the announcement.
Affleck will star alongside Henry Cavill who will again play the role of Superman. Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane are also set to reprise their roles on the film. The upcoming film which will reportedly be out by July 2015 is the first movie to star both Batman and Superman.
