NBA Trade Rumors 2014: Indiana Pacers Quietly Shopping Roy Hibbert?
The Indiana Pacers are reportedly shopping Roy Hibbert in hopes of making big changes this offseason to improve their title chances next season.
SportingNews reported that the Pacers are "quietly" looking to trade Hibbert, who struggled during the latter part of the regular season and the playoffs where he became a constant target of criticisms.
Hibbert, who averaged 17.0 points and 9.9 rebound during the 2012-13 NBA Playoffs, was a huge disappointment for the Pacers in this year's postseason where he posted just 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
"They're open to making major changes, if they're there," a SportingNews source was quoted as saying. "I think they'd be disappointed to see that same core group back intact, so it is a matter of, how drastic can the changes they make be? Moving Hibbert for multiple pieces would be a pretty drastic change."
However, trading Hibbert is easier said than done, considering his struggles during the crucial part of last season. The 27-year-old center still has two-years left in his contract that pays him around $30 million in the next two seasons.
Sources also indicated that the Pacers, who were eliminated by the Miami Heat for the third-straight season, are looking to trade Hibbert to a Western Conference team.
The Portland Trail Blazers previously tried to acquire the former Georgetown standout, but a trade between Indiana and Portland is highly unlikely at this point because the Trail Blazers are focused on securing a long-term deal with LaMarcus Aldridge.
SportingNews also indicated that one of the main reasons why the Pacers are looking to move Hibbert is the team's current negotiation with Lance Stephenson, who had a breakout year last season.
Stephenson, who averaged 13.8 points to go along with 7.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists last season, reportedly turned down a five-year, $44 million offer from the Pacers, insisting that he deserves a better deal.
The Pacers are trying to move Hibbert's expensive contract in order to create room for a more lucrative offer to Stephenson, who is expected to draw significant interest on the free agency market once the bigger names -- like LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony -- make their decision this summer.
ESPN reported that the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers are interested in acquiring Stephenson, but both teams are still waiting for the decision of Anthony and James.
