Republican Party News: Cleveland Wins Bid to Host National GOP Convention in 2016
It's official -- Republicans will flock to Cleveland, Ohio for the 2016 Republican National Committee (RNC) convention.
RNC chairman Reince Priebus announced on Tuesday during a Fox News interview that the next convention will be hosted in Ohio and would start on either June 28 or July 18 of 2016.
"We're excited about bringing the convention to Cleveland and Ohio," Priebus said. "It's a smart decision."
Cleveland beat out Dallas for the final nomination, which means that the GOP's nomination festivities will take place in a key presidential battleground state, reports Politico. No Republican has been elected into the Oval Office without winning Ohio since the 19th century.
The convention will also likely bring millions of dollars to the city just as it did in 2012, when Tampa, Florida raked in $404 million from the RNC conference. More than 50,000 Republican delegates, party officials and reporters traveled to Tampa for the convention, according to a University of Tampa study.
"For the first time since 1936 we're going to have an opportunity to showcase our great state and our city of Cleveland," Republican Sen. Rob Portman told USA Today on Tuesday. The RNC "couldn't have picked a better city to demonstrate what our party's all about," he said, adding that Cleveland is the middle of a "rebirth."
"We're in the heartland. We're also on the road to the White House," Portman added.
In his Fox News interview, Priebus described the choice as a "business decision."
"I will say it was a business decision, when it came down to hotels, the venue, the arena, it was unbelievable," Priebus said. He added, "In the end, as well, it's Cleveland, Ohio, and as goes Ohio, so goes the presidential race."
"Cleveland is a phenomenal city, and I can't think of a better place to showcase our party and our nominee in 2016," Enid Mickelsen, head of the site selection committee, said in a statement. "Cleveland has demonstrated they have the commitment, energy, and terrific facilities to help us deliver a history-making Republican convention."
