Last night's MTV Video Music Awards was full of memorable performances, but none were quite as talked about as Miley Cyrus' performance of her summer single "We Can't Stop."

Last night, the 20-year-old pop star walked out on stage with nothing but a leotard alongside a group of giant teddy bears. As she began to perform her hit single, which has topped the iTunes charts, she proceeded to show off some sexually charged dance moves that involved grabbing her crotch.

At the end of the song, Cyrus stripped down to a skin colored latex bra and matching underwear and proceeded to twerk multiple times.

R&B star Robin Thicke then entered the stage to perform his smash hit "Blurred Lines" alongside Cyrus, who continued to perform the chart topper with Thicke while she uninhibitedly danced and grinded with him.

Twitter went wild during and following the performance, with many criticizing and praising what they had just witnessed.

"i am still trying to recover from the miley cyrus performance," one user tweeted.

Billboard's editorial director Bill Werde was more enthusiastic about the performance.

"Guys, Miley Cyrus is an all-star hot mess for a hot mess pop moment," he tweeted. "She doesn't care what u think and that's her brand. & she just delivered."

Cyrus managed to outshine Lady Gaga in the outrageous performance department. Gaga's performance of her new single "Applause" involved many makeup and costume changes, but it wasn't quite as shocking as what Cyrus delivered.

In VMAs past, Gaga has performed covered in fake blood, sung as her male alter-ego Joe Calderone and worn a dress made entirely out of raw meat.

Kanye West, Macklemore, Jennifer Hudson and Justin Timberlake along with *NSYNC were among the other performers at last night's awards ceremony.
