On July 11, a number of films will enter the market place attempting to build an audience and obtain a good box office.

The week will include a franchise film and two acclaimed independent films:

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes"

"The Planet of the Apes" franchise is back after an absence of three years.

The new film, directed by Matt Reeves and starring Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman, tells the story of a growing nation of genetically evolved apes, led by Caesar, who are threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. When the humans and apes reach a fragile peace, it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth's dominant species. The film has been receiving great reviews and has even been compared to the classic "Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back." The film currently has a 97 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes. Based on how well the last installment did at the box office, this film is likely to surpass it and even become one of the surprises of the summer. Fox is planning an aggressive launch and will release it 3,800 theaters.

"Boyhood"

Richard Linklater will return to cinemas with his latest picture "Boyhood." The film, starring Ellar Coltrane, Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette, tells the story of Mason as he grows up through 12 years of his life. The movie is one of the most unique in modern cinema as Linklater and his cast filmed throughout 12 summers. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and Berlin Festival, where it received ecstatic reviews and critics were calling it a masterpiece. It went on to win the Best Director award at Berlin and it has become one of the first Oscar contenders which most pundits pin as an early front runner. IFC Films is also doing a different strategy for the work as it will launch the film in theaters and later expand nationwide. It will not launch on VOD as the company usually does. This weekend, the film will play in five theaters around Los Angeles and New York.

"Land Ho!"

Sony Pictures Classics will release the Sundance hit "Land Ho!" after a successful festival run. The new movie, starring Paul Eenhoorn and Earl Lynn Nelson, tells the story of a pair of former brothers-in-law who embark on a road trip through Iceland. The movie currently has a 77 percent aggregate score on Rotten Tomatoes and critics are raving about the enjoyable performances and the landscapes featured in the movie. Sony will begin a limited roll out before expanding it.

"A Long Way Down"

After a huge hit with "Life Itself," Magnolia Pictures will release the Pierce Brosnan and Toni Collette picture. The film tells the story of four people who meet on New Year's Eve and form a surrogate family to help one another weather the difficulties of their lives. The feature has not received good reviews, and with little buzz, it is unlikely Magnolia will give it a huge expansion theatrically. Instead, it will most likely focus its energies on the VOD and On Demand Outlets.

Other films being released this week include the Foreign Film "Closed Curtain" by Variance Films and the Strand Release "The Empty Hours."
