After several months of finding itself in a state of limbo, the latest film by Terry Gilliam, "The Zero Theorem," has been announced for release on iTunes and in theaters in the coming months.

Starring the two-time Academy Award recipient Christoph Waltz as the reclusive and eccentric existentialist computer genius Qohen Leth, the film takes on the impossible concept of the meaning of life.

The lead character Qohen Leth has been personally delegated by Management (Matt Damon) to deal with a difficult and mysterious project with the aim of once and for all discovering the meaning of life, or the lack thereof. While he obsessively works on the task at hand, he is continuously interrupted by unwanted visits from other characters, including the flirtatious Bainsley. As he goes on to find answers, it is only when he experiences desire and the power of love that he understands the reason for his own being.

The film has found itself faced with different difficulties in terms of production and release, as Terry Gilliam has not exactly been lucky with his projects. Movie Mezzanine even said that his name is "synonymous with production troubles." Although Gilliam has been criticized for his films "12 Monkeys" and "Brazil," "The Zero Theorem" looks more promising, with a hint of intrigue and existential mysteries being thematically presented in the trailer. Still, Gilliam is one of the last mavericks whose mind works on a relatively big scale, making the film worth a shot.

Christoph Waltz will be joined by Melanie Thierry, Lucas Hedges, David Thewlis, Tilda Swinton, Ben Whishaw, and Matt Damon.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the science fiction and fantasy drama film an aggregate score of 54 percent from critics, while users have yet to see the film and give their own take.

"The Zero Theorem" will be available on iTunes on Aug. 19 while its theatrical release is set a month later on Sept. 19.
