Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana Next Fight Update: Rematch Set for Sept. 13 in Las Vegas
Floyd Mayweather Jr. will face Marcos Maidana in a rematch on Sept. 13 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the unbeaten champion confirmed.
Mayweather announced on Thursday through his Twitter account the second fight between him and Maidana was already sealed, fulfilling his promise to give the Argentine another chance after engaging in an action-packed showdown in May.
Maidana was a heavy underdog heading into their first fight on May 3, but the former WBA welterweight champion gave Mayweather one of the toughest fights if not the toughest of his career before the reigning pound-for-pound king escaped with a win.
Mayweather, who kept his record unblemished with a majority-decision win, said that he decided to agree to a second fight to give fans the fight that they want to see.
"Marcos Maidana is a tough customer, and he gave me a fight that had me work for the victory," Mayweather said in a statement via ESPN. "His style is difficult at best, but with experience comes a way and will to win. I'm not one to give second chances in the ring, but I want to give the fans what they want to see."
Mayweather, who is still undefeated in 46 professional fights, said that he knows what to expect in their second fight, and he expressed confidence that he will score a convincing win against 'El Chino.'
"I will be as prepared as I always am when I step in the ring on Sept. 13. I only see the outcome one way and that's another successful night for me and my team," Mayweather said.
Maidana, on the other hand, vowed not to let the second chance slip away from his hands, saying that he will successfully hand Mayweather the first defeat of his career and end his reign as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
"The rematch with Mayweather is the only fight that really motivates me," Mayweather said. "I feel I earned it in the ring and Floyd owed it to me. I've already proved that I don't care if the man I have in front of me is the best pound-for-pound champion. I was close to ending his reign last time. On Sept. 13 he will not get away undefeated."
