True Detective Season 2 Premiere and Cast News: Colin Farrell in Talks to Star Next Season
The ending of "True Detective" has sparked rumors about which actors could possibly take over for Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
Deadline now reports that Colin Farrell is in talks with HBO about starring on the series.
"I can tell you that Colin Farrell is deep in negotiations to play one of what is expected to be three main roles in Season 2," said Mike Fleming Jr. "HBO would not confirm any of the potential castings, but I am confident that Farrell will be in the cast."
HBO executives did reveal a little bit of information about Season 2.
"The two scripts we have ... I hate to jinx it ... they are more exciting than the first season," said Michael Lombardo, HBO programming president, at the Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills. "[Creator Nic Pizzolatto is] an incredibly talented writer. And he's blown us away with the first two episodes."
Lombardo would not make any announcements on the cast, but he did say that it would be officially announced possibly next week.
He joked that the second season would be filmed with puppets before talking about HBO's goal with casting.
"The people we will cast will be well-known names, but [casting stars] wasn't our ambition," he said. "Great writing attracts great actors... Maybe people initially came for [Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson], but I think they stayed because the show was so compelling."
Pizzolatto previously revealed that the second season was going to be set in California, but not in Los Angeles, according to Entertainment Weekly.
Cary Fukunaga directed all episodes of Season 1, but EW hears that this time around, there might be a different director each season. Also, Season 2 may have eight episodes.
One of the things Pizzolatto confirmed was about the feel of the second season.
"It's a story that uses the popular genre of police investigation to conduct a more nuanced metaphysical investigation of its characters and their world," he said. "In 'True Detective,' the world itself is the crime ... This corruption at the root of the world. The poison at the root of the world is humanity."
