Social Media Saturday: 99 Days Without Facebook, Snapchat Officially Owns the Teen Demo and Tumblr and Vine Get Along
This week in social media, a campaign was launched to temp people to take 99 consecutive days off of Facebook. Meanwhile, Snapchat was revealed to officially be the most popular social media app for young people, and you can now embed Vines in Tumblr blogs (how very cross-platform!).
It's time again for Social Media Saturday!
Facebook: 99 Days Off?
Following the news that Facebook controversially messed with over 600,000 users' News Feeds to experiment on their moods (without notifying them), a Dutch nonprofit called Just B.V. launched a campaign called "99 Days of Freedom."
It's not just a "boycott Facebook" campaign, though, as it involves happiness surveys that participants will take at the 33, 66 and 99-day points, according to Forbes. The initiative began as a joke around the offices of the Dutch creative agency, when many employees were bothered by news that Facebook had performed a secret the mood experiment on its users.
"As we discussed it internally, we noted an interesting tendency: To a person, everyone had at least a 'complicated' relationship with Facebook," Just B.V. wrote in its release. "Whether it was being tagged in unflattering photos, getting into arguments with other users or simply regretting time lost through excessive use, there was a surprising degree of negative sentiment.
"Then someone joked, 'I guess that the real question is, How do you feel when you don't use Facebook? There was group laughter, followed by, 'Wait a second. That's a really good question!" The agency reports that, according to Facebook, the 1.2 billion users of the social network spend an average of 17 minutes on the site. That adds up to more than 28 hours over a three-month period. The Dutch agency wondered if that time could be spent doing more fulfilling things with actual friends and family, instead of online.

Snapchat: The Biggest Hit with Teens
It's been common knowledge that one of the top demographics, young teenage people, has been adopting Snapchat in droves -- much to the chagrin of bigger companies like Facebook. But now there's an in-depth study, from Business Insider's research wing, showing just how popular the ephemeral messaging service is.
Needless to say, it's very popular. Two out of five 18-year-olds in the U.S. use Snapchat "multiple times daily" to communicate with friends. And the rate at which people are sharing Snaps on the network is absolutely exploding.
On top of that, paid ads have doubled over the past two months, getting 1 billion views every day. Compared to the average of 760 million daily Snaps being sent, it means Snapchat is an advertising behemoth -- no wonder Facebook tried (unsuccessfully) to buy it.
Vine and Tumblr: Together At Last
The Yahoo-owned social blogging site announced on Twitter on Thursday that it was officially announcing integration with Vine videos, in a very NSFW-language tweet (via Mashable):
Now you can embed Vines into your Tumblr homepage in the video post box by simply adding the URL or embed code. Tumblr is about to get way more animated!
