Boxing News 2014: Erislandy Lara Wants Rematch Against Canelo Alvarez After Split Decision Loss
Erislandy Lara felt that he was robbed of a win in his showdown against Saul "Canelo" Alvarez on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, and the WBA junior welterweight champion wants an immediate rematch.
Alvarez, who was a heavy favorite heading into Saturday's fight, escaped with a split decision victory, with two judges scoring the fight 117-111 and 115-113, while the other one had it for Lara, 115-113.
"It was disgraceful what they did to us," Lara said of the decision via BoxingScene. "I want an immediate rematch. I will once again show that I'm better than him. He knows in his heart that he lost."
Lara added that the decision was worse than his controversial loss to Paul Williams. The 31-year-old Cuban took a majority decision loss to Williams in 2011 when most boxing experts believe that Lara won by a mile. The three judges who scored the bout were suspended afterwards.
"This worse, this is worse than the Paul Williams fight. Paul Williams threw 1,000 shots. Canelo threw 400 and landed 97. Canelo didn't land 100 punches in twelve rounds and that tells you everything that you need to know. I made him miss all night long. I made him look worse than Williams," Lara said.
However, Lara might not get the rematch that he is asking for, as Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya sounded cold to the idea of pitting the two fighters against each other again.
When asked during the post-fight press conference about a rematch, De La Hoya insisted that they have more fighters in line for Alvarez, and nobody wants a rematch -- except from Lara's camp.
"What I heard from everybody -- they don't want a rematch," De La Hoya said. "Nobody wants a rematch. Now, there's ten guys in line. Lara just lost and now he has to wait in line. There is ten guys in line. That's the way this works."
Canelo's manager Jose Reynoso said that Alvarez will fight again in December and they are strongly considering James Kirkland as his next opponent. Miguel Cotto is also on their radar, but Reynoso said that they want the fight against the Puerto Rican in May 2015.
