MLB Trade Rumors 2014: Miami Marlins Getting Calls for All-Star Slugger Giancarlo Stanton
Miami Marlins general manager Dan Jennings revealed that several teams have expressed interest in trading for All-Star slugger Giancarlo Stanton.
In an interview with Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo, Jennings said that he is starting to get calls about the availability of Stanton, who is batting .295/.395/.538 this season with 21 homeruns.
But despite receiving strong offers, Jennings insisted that teams should not think that they are going to give up key players because their playoff hopes are fading, reiterating that the 24-year-old right fielder is not on trading block.
"I think teams thought that by losing a few games we were out of it and we were selling off," Jennings said. "So sure, I started to get calls and teams presenting scenarios about what it would take, and I said the same thing I've been saying, we're not trading him."
Jennings declined to name the teams who inquired about a possible trade for Stanton, but Cafardo speculated that Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles, Toronto Blue Jays, and the Texas Rangers could be the teams Jennings was talking about.
So far, Jennings sounded firm on their stance of keeping Stanton, who could become a free agent after the 2016 season. The Panorama, California native has been cold about the idea of signing a long-term deal before, but Jennings expressed confidence that they can convince Stanton to sign a new deal before he hits free agency.
"I think some things have changed for Giancarlo," Jennings said. "He's taken a leadership role here. He knows we're serious about winning and how much we want him to be part of that. He's seen the team come together and the young talent developing around him."
But if Stanton forces his way out of the Marlins, most executives are convinced that teams should give up top prospects in any deal to convince Miami.
And among the alleged interested teams, Cafardo named the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Phillies, Tigers, Mariners, and Rangers as Stanton's possible landing spot.
"Stanton won't come cheap. If you have the chips, you also must have the resources to sign him," Cafardo wrote. "That eliminates a lot of teams. It would likely come down to the Red Sox, Yankees, Dodgers, Angels, Phillies, Tigers, Mariners, and Rangers."
