Maite Perroni may be a leading lady and singing sensation, but there was a time when many said she'd never have a career.

Of course, she has proven them wrong as she has starred in five telenovelas, including "La Gata," and has gotten back into music. But she remembers the harsh words others said about her, notes People en Español.

"There have been different critiques throughout the years," she said. "Obviously, you make decisions and you learn. I remember when I started, many people said, 'No, Maite will never be the lead. She's super gray. She has no personality. When RBD is over, she will go to her house and nothing will ever happen.' Of course, it made me feel bad, but it was also a commitment to prove otherwise."

She never saw limits for herself.

Perroni said she would tell herself that she could obviously make a record as a solo artist and that she could carry a show. What she did was prepare herself.

"I didn't know if I would accomplish it or not," she said. "But from that moment on all my energy and work was focused around preparing myself, and little by little I reached my goals."

Perroni's album, "Eclipse de Luna," was released recently, and the singer opened up about what the work means to her. She said it was a riskier album for her, especially since she dared to go back into music after so many years. She has no idea if it will be her last album or just the first one.

"I am living my life day to day, and my intention in this moment is to share this album and to continue doing what I'm most passionate about, which is acting," she said. "We'll see what life has in store for me in the future."
