Comedian Brooks Wheelan shocked "SNL" fans after tweeting that he had been fired from "Saturday Night Live" after one season.

Wheelan tweeted to his 33,000 plus Twitter followers on Monday.

Director and screenwriter Judd Apatow offered Wheelan a glimmer of hope on Twitter, tweeting that the 27-year-old comedian from Iowa could end up being the next Robert Downey Jr: ".‪@brookswheelan you will have the Robert Downey Jr. post SNL career! (minus the painful drug addiction). Rock on friend!"

Robert Downey Jr. began his career on "SNL" in 1985 and was also fired from the show after one season.

Since leaving the "SNL" cast, Downey Jr. has gone on to become a Golden Globe winning actor.

NBC has yet to comment on Wheelan's termination from the show, but a source from the Hollywood Reporter confirms that Wheelan's "SNL" contract was not renewed.

Wheelen was hired at the last minute for Season 39 of "SNL." The NBC sketch comedy show took a chance on Wheelan, who has openly admitted to having little to no experience with sketch comedy or character work.

Wheelan was among many "newbies" added to the Season 39 "SNL" cast, which includes Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, John Milhiser, Noel Wells, Mike O'Brien and Sasheer Zamata.

The fate of the other newcomer "SNL" cast members will be announced sometime in August.

So what's next for Wheelan now that he's been axed from "SNL?"

Well, he plans to take Judd Apatow's advice and follow in Robert Downey Jr.'s footsteps.
