Transformers 4 "Age of Extinction" Has Movie Theater Success: Becomes Highest Grossing Film of the Year, Surpassing "Captain America," "X-Men" and "Spiderman"
Despite receiving negative reviews from movie critics but a thumbs up from avid fans, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" has become the highest grossing film this year, earning a total of $750 million worldwide, Cinema Blend reported.
The science fiction and action film by Michael Bay is still not the top-grossing movie domestically, however. "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" is still at the top with $250 million, while "Transformers" is at $209 million at the U.S. box office. The movie has also done remarkably well at the box office in China with a record-breaking $262 million.
On its way to the top, "Transformers: Age of Extinction" overtook three superhero movies, namely "X-Men: Days of Future Past" with $731.4 million in second, "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" with $712.4 million at third, and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" with $705 million at fourth place. So far this year, only superhero films and this giant robot movie have crossed the $700 million mark.
No other film is expected to hit a higher mark this year and reach around a billion, except maybe for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," which surprised moviegoers by being a good film, and "Guardians of the Galaxy" but only because of high expectations since it's a Marvel film. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" and "The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies" are also set to be top-earners toward the end of this year. However, it looks like Transfomers may end up being the first and only billion-dollar movie this year.
While Cinema Blend reported that critics have said that the film is very poor in terms of movie quality, and some fans have admitted this as well, people still went to see the movie. In just three weeks, it was able to garner this amount of sales despite being available only in certain territories. In the words of Michael Bay, "Let them hate."
