October has just gotten a lot chillier.

FX has announced that 'American Horror Story: Coven' will premiere Wednesday, Oct. 9. at 10 p.m. The third season of Ryan Murphy's dark and twisted horror series will have 13 episodes and be centered on witches and witchcraft in New Orleans.

Returning for Season 3 are Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Lily Rabe, Frances Conroy, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O'Hare and Alexandra Breckenridge. Farmiga, Breckenridge and O'Hare all had roles in the first season of 'American Horror Story' but did not appear in the second season, 'American Horror Story: Asylum.'

New additions to the Season 3 cast include Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Gabourey Sidibe, Patti LuPone and Emma Roberts.

FX has also released the official description of 'Coven,' which takes place over 300 years after the Salem witch trials.

"Over 300 years have passed since the turbulent days of the Salem witch trials and those who managed to escape are now facing extinction. Mysterious attacks have been escalating against their kind and young girls are being sent away to a special school in New Orleans to protect themselves," reads the spooky description.

The synopsis continues, "Wrapped up in turmoil is Zoe, who is harboring a terrifying secret of her own. Alarmed by the recent aggression, Fiona, the long-absent Supreme, sweeps back into town, determined to protect the Coven and hell-bent on decimating anyone who gets in her way."

At the Summer TCA press tour last month, some of the actresses revealed their roles, E! News reported. Lange will play the presumably lead role as Fiona, while Paulson will play her daughter.

'American Horror Story: Asylum' was nominated for 17 Emmys this year, including Outstanding Miniseries or Movie and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for Lange. Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell and Paulson also garnered acting nominations for their roles in the second season.

Lange won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie at last year's awards, for her portayal of Constance Langdon in the first season of 'American Horror Story.' The 2013 Primetime Emmys air Sept. 22 on CBS.

Aside from a release date and synopsis, a spooky new teaser has also been released for 'American Horror Story: Coven.'
