iOS 7.1.2 Jailbreak News: Pangu, Not Evad3rs, Behind Latest Hack
Apple's latest mobile operating system is currently iOS 7.1.2 and it was only released on June 30. It brought small changes including iBeacon and Mail improvements. But leave it to hackers to spoil Apple's "ironclad" mobile operating system, no matter the significance of the release.
That's right, it's here. The latest iOS jailbreak wasn't even really released... iOS 7.1.2 has indeed been hacked, but it's because the 7.1.1 jailbreak still works on the new OS. That jailbreak had been successfully exploited several weeks prior.
For those not technologically inclined, jailbreaking is the ability to override and replace elements of Apple's iOS software in an effort to give it more functionality. For example: you may want to use your phone as a mobile hotspot, but dread having to pay Verizon or AT&T for that feature. With jailbreaking such things are possible.
It turns out that prolific jailbreaking Evad3rs isn't behind this latest version. Chinese hacker group Pangu is. They managed to exploit a non-secure portion of Apple's mobile operating system firmware in order to create the untethered jailbreak. Apparently, Apple's very own developers still can't figure out how Pangu managed to jailbreak the software!
Who knows if any new minor software updates for iOS 7 will be released by Apple. It isn't a given considering that iOS 8 will be released in the fall. The Next Digit suggests that, "Apple might choose to release a 7.1.3 update for overall improvements and minor bugs."
Business Insider's Senior Tech Editor Dave Smith wrote an entire article questioning whether jailbreaking iOS 8 is necessary. Smith doesn't think it will be, but that isn't stopping hacker Stefan Esser, better known as i0n1c in tech circles.
What will iOS 8 bring? Major productivity enhancements are being included, though opponents of the colorful iOS 7 icons will be disappointed that the UI won't differ much between versions.
Jailbreaking your device used to be taboo; now it's a more respected way to use your your iPhone. That being said, have you jailbroken an Apple device including Apple TVs, iPhones and iPads? Let us know in the comments section below.
