'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' vs. 'Sex Tape': Movie Theaters Summer Releases Earn Mixed Reviews
The summer releases in the domestic market are having a big time battle at the box office. Some releases were received with much anticipation, while others barely received any notice at all.
During its opening weekend, "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," the sequel to the 2011 movie "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," grossed $72.6 million, according to Deadline.
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is a science fiction movie directed by Matt Reeves. Stars of the movie include Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Jason Clarke and Keri Russell. It was released in the U.S. on July 11 and had received very positive reviews. Critics were praising its emotional depth, acting, direction, story and visual effects.
On its second weekend, the "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is expected to drop about 53 percent of its box office performance but is still expected to gross about $10 million on Friday and about $30 million to over $33 million on Saturday and Sunday. The total cumulative gross earnings for the second week is estimated to reach $137.3 million.
Meanwhile, the American comedy film "Sex Tape," which stars Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Rob Lowe, Ellie Kemper and Rob Corddry, is not doing very well at the box office. It opened on July 18, one week after the release of "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes." Shown in 2,457 domestic theaters, it only earned $1.1 million on its opening night. According to Box Office Mojo, the film has received generally unfavorable and negative reviews from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic with the film being labeled as suffering from "cinematic impotence."
Still, "Sex Tape" is expected to at least get a gross of about $5.5 million on Friday and make at least about $15 million to $17 million during the weekend. For some people though, "Sex Tape" could not be considered a flop and is just the usual unassuming summer film.
