Disney 'Planes: Fire and Rescue' Movie Trailer, Release Date, Cast & Characters: 3D Pixar Animated 'Cars' Sequel Rated Mediocre by Critics but Above Average to Families, Audiences [Video]
Disney attempts to make a return from its lowest point with the film "Planes," which was a spin-off of the highly successful "Cars" franchise of Pixar. Disney has made a sequel entitled "Planes: Fire and Rescue."
The first film was heavily criticized and received generally negative reviews with only a 26 percent approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It was called a disappointment for Disney since it seemed not to be at par with the entertainment company's standards. "Planes" was deemed to be a mere distraction to children with its bright colors, slick animation and goofy voices.
It was also criticized for being overtly sexist, forcing the company to make some adjustments in this sequel, according to The Daily Californian.
"Planes: Fire and Rescue" will be featuring a story with social involvement and a strong female character designed to make up for the company's past mistake. The character of Dusty, voiced by Dane Cook, returns but will follow a new path. After he learns that he may never race again because of his damaged engine, he joins a team of veteran fire and rescue planes and helicopters.
As a former air racer, he struggles to adjust to his new role. But later on he battles a massive wildfire with the rest of the fearless team, and he learns what it takes to become a real hero.
While the film did not receive much critical acclaim, it is certainly an improvement on its prequel. Rotten Tomatoes gave a rating of 45 percent based on mixed reviews, and it received a 48 out of 100 from Metacritic. Despite the low ratings from critics, audience members scored it slightly higher and suggest that "Planes: Fire and Rescue" is generally a good film that families would enjoy.
The 3D computer-animated comedy-adventure film by DisneyToon Studios was released on July 15 for a Los Angeles premiere while it was out on July 18 for the rest of the United States.
