Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles New Movie Theme Song: Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Ty Dolla $ign Team Up for 'Shell Shocked' [Listen]
Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J and Ty Dolla $ign team up to create "Shell Shocked," the end credit song for Paramount's upcoming film "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."
"TMNT" first started as a comic book back in 1984, and became a television show in 1987, as well as three popular science-fiction action movies in the 1990s. It is now set to return to the big screen once again, with the hip-hop trio's music offering as a theme song.
After it has been under discussion for almost a year and half among the franchise's production team, the track was finally released to iTunes on Tuesday, July 22, via Atlantic Records.
According to Billboard, Paramount Pictures president of music Randy Spendlove received a photo of Khalifa with a circle around his calf tattoo of Donatello, one of the four teenage anthropomorphic turtles. The Pittsburgh emcee then called to participate on the song.
"When they asked me to do it, just being a fan and being a musician, it made sense," the "Black and Yellow" hitmaker said in a statement. "In my generation, I think everyone who listens to me loves the Turtles as much as I do, so it just made sense."
"It was brought to my attention there are a lot of artists in the hip-hop world that are big, true fans of this beloved property," said Spendlove. "We felt we should reach out to guys who really love the franchise and build an event."
While the three hip-hop musicians wrote and recorded "Shell Shocked," with the melody from Brian Tyler's film score and the chorus from Capitol Records artist Moxie Raia, who sings on the track, as well.
Fellow rapper A$AP Rocky was supposed to appear on the song, however could not make it due to schedule conflict. "We opted to leave him off the track," said Spendlove. "I think we'll see something special from him that he'll do on his own in honor of the 'Ninja Turtles.'"
"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" hits theaters on Aug. 8.
