Nintendo is offering a price cut to gamers for the Wii U as well as a cheaper choice in gaming with the release of the 2DS. The price changes are an effort to compete with the upcoming release of Sony's Playstation 4 and Microsoft's Xbox One.

The company made the announcement on Monday. The Wii U deluxe set will drop from $349.99 to $299.99 starting Sept. 20.

In addition, Nintendo will release a Wii U bundle. The bundle will come with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, which is a remake of the 2003 release. The bundle will be for sale starting Sept. 20, also for $299.99.

The 2DS, which is actually a new version of the 3DS, will also be set at a price that Nintendo hopes shoppers will consider more economical. The 2DS plays games in 2D only but can also play 3DS and DS video games. The 2DS is $40 cheaper than the 3DS, priced at $129.99.

Unlike the 3DS, however, the 2DS does not have 3D display. On the other hand, the 2DS has the same stylus as the 3DS. It also has Wi-Fi capability and a 4GB SD card is included.

According to Nintendo, the 2DS is a "handheld gaming system from Nintendo like you've never seen before."

Nintendo 2DS will be released on Oct. 12.

Apparently, Nintendo has been struggling with sales as of late. From the time the Wii U was released in November until June, 3.61 million consoles have been sold. Nintendo aims to sell nine million consoles over the fiscal year through March of next year.

Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, believes that gamers want more games to go along with the Wii U that they love. This year, Nintendo will release Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Wii Party U and Wii Fit U for the Wii U.

"As long as we create high-quality software we will be able to drive our business," Fils-Aime said. "Now is the right time to offer better value. This sets us up for a strong holiday season."
