Several people were injured Saturday night in Ohio when a cable snapped on an amusement park ride that swings riders into the air.

A cable on the swing ride, which is called the Skyhawk, snapped around 10 p.m. at the Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky. The Skyhawk works by swinging riders back and forth at speeds of up to 60 mph. However, the cable that was attached to one of the ride's carriages unloosened and struck two different people.

One of the injured guests was treated and released at the park, while the other was taken to a local hospital where they were received treatment before being released, reported WKYC.

Season ticket holder Tom Achtziger said that he and his two children were on the ride during the freak accident.

"It was awful," Achtziger said in an email, according to USA Today. "When the cable broke they didn't stop the ride. They shut down the power, and the ride kept swinging, letting gravity take over. ... Meanwhile the cable was whipping around smacking the ride and destroying things on the ground. We are all lucky that there were no more serious injuries."

Achtziger also said that he snapped pictures of the ride "while we were still trapped in our seats as the ride would not release the safety belts."

Cedar Point spokesman Bryan Edwards announced that the ride will remain closed until the park completes an investigation.

"Safety is our top priority," he said.

Ironically, this is not the first time the ride has had a mechanical problem. Skyhawk was shut down within 24 hours after it first opened back in 2006. Plus, the park said the ride was temporarily closed for a period of time in 2013. Both shut downs were occurred because of unrelated technical problems.
