San Diego Fugitive Pedophile Killed in Shootout With NYPD
A suspected child pedophile on the run was fatally shot after he opened fire on three officers on Monday.
The suspect, 32-year-old Charles Richard Thomas Mozdir, was wanted in San Diego for sexually abusing his friend's 7-year-old son. After recently being featured on CNN's "The Hunt," officials say they received a cyber tip that he was hiding out in New York City.
On Monday, two U.S. Marshals and a New York City police officer from a federal fugitive task force attempted to arrest Mozdir in Manhattan's West Village, reports the New York Times. However, the suspect opened fire, wounding the three officers before he was fatally shot.
The three officers who were shot during the gunfire were taken to Bellevue Hospital and reported to be in stable condition. One federal agent suffered from a gun wound in the buttocks and the other was shot in the arm. The police officer was shot twice in the stomach, PIX11 reported.
"That's one more low-life who's off the streets," the host of the CNN program, John Walsh, said.
One woman described the police scene, telling CBS New York, "There were cars galore, officers running with their heavy vests saying 'U.S. Task Force,' 'U.S. Fugitive,' 'U.S. Terrorism' and then 'U.S. Marshal' came in. I think everybody who had to be here was here."
Mozdir allegedly sexually assaulted his close friends' 7-year-old son while he was suppose to be watching the feverish child. Officers also found evidence of child pornography at his home, CNN reported.
He was charged with child molestation and child pornography. However, after he was arrested and posted bail in 2012, he fled and failed to appear at an arraignment following his arrest in San Diego County.
Mozdir, who had been wanted on a $1 million warrant, appeared on "The Hunt" about wanted criminals and suspected criminals just days ago.
