Season 5 of "The Vampire Diaries" ended with a major shocker when Damon and Bonnie died after they were cast into the white light in order to put a halt on The Other Side. However, at Comic-Con International, the cast addressed whether or not the two stars will make a comeback in Season 6.

Although both actors Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham appeared on stage at the Comic-Con panel discussion, showrunner Julie Plec hit fans with some hard news when she confirmed that their characters, Damon and Bonnie, have died and can no longer come back. However, she teased that they will be featured in special appearances on the show, which could mean that Damon will appear in a memory or a flashback.

The executive producer also said that Season 6 picks up four months after the finale, and the remaining characters will find different ways to cope with the traumatic events that occurred in Season 5.

Nina Dobrev also talked about her character, Elena, who is not in a happy place and resorts to strange and confusing ways to deal with her grief over the passing of her lover and friend, reports Christian Today.

However, the EP dismissed ideas that Elena will rekindle her old flame with Stefan now that Damon is out of the picture.

"Right now the love between Damon and Elena is so strong and the friendship between Stefan and Elena has grown strong," explained Plec, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Meanwhile, Plec teased that fans can expect to see more crossovers from "The Originals" whose characters will visit Mystic Falls. She said that the writers and producers are always "talking about different paths" to incorporate crossovers.

Season 6 of "The Vampire Diaries" will return to The CW on Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. EST.
