There's no doubt that Ariana Grande is having a moment, but is she comparable to Britney Spears circa 2002?

MTV thinks so.

"If 'TRL' was around today, Ariana would be a fixture in the same way Britney was when Britney was of the moment," said Amy Doyle, MTV's executive vice president of music and talent programming strategy.

At MTV, bringing back "Total Request Live" was a goal, but it wasn't sure how to do this before thinking of Grande. MTV and Grande's team set up ways to help launch the singer's new album, which will be released later this month.

"She was absolutely the perfect artist to do that because her fans are active, and she's very social," Doyle said.

Monte Lipman, the CEO and chairman of Republic Records, echoed MTV's statements about Grande's appeal.

"What's so attractive about Ariana is, No. 1 she's an extraordinary talent, No. 2 she's an exceptional actress, and the third part of it -- which makes her a triple threat -- is she has this wildly successful fan base on the Internet unlike anything we've seen in some time," Lipman said.

Though she has been having a lot of success, Grande has also been having a difficult time. Her grandfather recently passed away.

Grande recently opened up about her almost-collaboration with Justin Bieber.

"We were working on it. We were in the studio together. ... We were going to do it, but then we both got busy," she said. "I had to focus on my stuff, and he was focusing on his and it just sort of didn't really get done."

She added that it will eventually happen because they feel they "owe it" to their fans.

Grande has also been offered parts in horror flicks, but had to turn it down because of her music career.

"It disappointed me so much because they were horror-related and horror is like my favorite thing in the world," she said. "But hopefully down the line I'll be able to work with those people again."
