Brandy Apologizes: She Lied to Oprah
R&B singer and actress Brandy Norwood apologized to Oprah Winfrey for lying about her marriage to Robert Smith.
MadameNoire reports that in 2002, at the time of her relationship to Smith, Norwood publicly announced that she and Smith had secretly gotten married and were pregnant with their first child.
The couple then went on to appear on a reality show together titled, "Brandy: Special Delivery," that focused on the birth of their daughter Sy'rai.
Evidently, Smith and Norwood were never married and "The Boy is Mine" singer blamed "having children out of wedlock" as the reason why she chose to lie about her marital status.
"I said that I was married because at that time being pregnant out of wedlock was not a trend. It was not something that people praised. It was a sin," Norwood revealed to Oprah during a recent episode of Oprah's "Where Are they Now?"
She continued, "I felt like I could not be honest about that. I felt the pressure of, again, having to be perfect. And I was scared. I thought that everything that I had worked hard for and everything that I worked to build, the image that I worked so hard to build was threatened. And I felt like having a child out of wedlock would ruin my career, everything that I had built."
Norwood also apologized to Oprah for deceiving her.
"And I'm really sorry for that because you just don't lie to Oprah, okay?!" the 35-year-old singer concluded.
Norwood later opened up about her thoughts on being a young celebrity in today's generation, reports the Huffington Post.
She admitted that had she grown up as a celebrity today, she doesn't think she "would have made it in this generation," due to the large influence of social media and the Internet.
"I feel for the young artists today because people can just type them anything that they want to say and [be] negative, you know?" she admitted. "I don't think I would have made it in this generation," she admits. "I don't think I had... that strength that you need to really have a sense of self."
