With "Guardians of the Galaxy" having been a huge success at the box office, fans and audiences are now questioning if Marvel plans on uniting the Guardians with the Avengers.

Throughout the past nine films Marvel has emphasized connecting their superhero films with one another. Yet, "Guardians of the Galaxy" seemed to inhabit a completely different world and different planets. It seemed that this new comic would be completely separate from the Avengers movies.

However, that may not be necessarily true.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" featured The Collector, a character that showed up at the end of credits of
"Thor: The Dark World." In the end credit sequence, The Collector is given an Infinity Gem to keep in his collection of mysterious items.

In "Guardians", the Infinity Gem plays a crucial role. Gamora gives The Collector a stone in exchange for money. When the item is delivered, the Guardians learn that it is one of the six Infinity Gems, which were objects forged out of singularities of power older than the universe. The gem is so powerful that it obliterates a person just seconds after they grasp it and even has the power to destroy an entire planet. The gem plays a crucial part in the "Guardians" film as Ronan the Accuser seeks it out to destroy the planet Xandar. At the end of the film, the government of Xandar takes it to hold in safety.

There is also speculation that the gem in Loki's scepter is also one of the Infinity Gems--possibly the Mind Gem, which can control the thoughts of other beings. At the end of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," the scepter is seen in the possession of Baron von Strucker, and there is a shot that emphasizes that stone.

Another reason to believe these two groups of heroes will meet is the connection to Thanos, speculated to be the main villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the end of the Avengers, it was revealed that Thanos would be a huge threat to the Avengers. Then, in the new "Guardians" flick, Thanos works with Ronan the Accuser to get the Infinity Stone and Gamora, who betrayed him.

Thanos is later betrayed by Ronan and his character disappears. However, the fact that he is chasing the infinity Stone only demonstrates the importance of this object for the upcoming films. Many pundits are speculating that the series is setting up for the famous "Infinity Gauntlet" storyline, in which Thanos takes the six gems and makes a gauntlet that threatens to destroy the universe.

Even the president of Marvel, Kevin Feige, has already implied that Thanos will be in the third Avengers film.

The "Guardians" film also leaves a number of plot holes that need to be filled in. Drax and Gamora want revenge on Thanos because he killed their loved ones, but they never encounter him. Peter Quill is also revealed to be half-human and the identity of his father is not revealed.

The fact that Marvel has intertwined a number of roles and the fact that Thor comes from Asgard and goes in and out of Earth leaves the possibility open for the "Guardians" to eventually go to Earth. Additionally Peter Quill/Star-Lord from "Guardians" is a human who was brought to Xandar.
