Tim Burton 'Big Eyes' Movie: Christoph Waltz, Amy Adams Star in 'Frankenweenie' Director's Biopic of Artist Margaret Keane
After his release of "Dark Shadows" and "Frankenweenie" a couple of years ago, Tim Burton has been missing in action from theaters since 2012. Later this year, the film director, producer and artist known for his dark and gothic themes will be returning with the anticipated "Big Eyes" starring 39-year-old actress Amy Adams, E! Online reported.
The film is a true story of a biopic artist named Margaret Keane who will be played by Adams with film effects and visuals obviously coming from the aesthetic imagination of Burton. Keane rose to popularity in the 1950s for her paintings that featured characters with big eyes.
"Big Eyes" will tell the story of how Keane's husband Walter, played by Christoph Waltz, began taking credit for the portraits that were really created by Margaret. The issue then leads to a "paint-off" in court to prove which among the two really possessed the artistic talent.
Walter was prompted to take credit since male artists during that time apparently sold pieces for a higher price compared to women. Margaret even believed at one point that people would not buy her art because she was a woman.
In preparation for filming the movie, Adams spent time with the real-life Margaret to observe in detail how the artist used her technique in creating the big eyes. While she took the time to study her skills "at great length," Adams told USA Today that she never mastered the style.
Margaret, now 87 years old, still paints in San Francisco, while her husband Walter had passed away in 2000. The "paint-off" in court took place in 1986, in which Margaret was awarded a total of $4 million in damages.
"Big Eyes" is set for release in theaters on Christmas, and it also stars Christoph Waltz, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman and Danny Huston.
