'Pacific Rim 2' Movie News and Release Date: Guillermo del Toro in Favor of a Video Game Accompanying the Sequel
Could a new "Pacific Rim" video game drop alongside the upcoming sequel?
Legendary Pictures presented an Oculus Rift virtual reality game at International Comic-Con 2014 in San Diego in late July, Game Rant reports. The game allowed gamers to "control" a virtual Jaeger alongside a projection of Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket while a giant Kaiju monster came their way.
In addition to gamers and fans, Mexican director Guillermo del Toro, who also wrote and produced for the original 2013 film, took a swing at the Oculus Rift.
"I have not only tried it, but ... I'm not only a club client, but I'm also the president," he said with a laugh during an interview with Game Rant. "The two attractions were designed under my supervision."
Del Toro even watched the virtual reality Comic-Con game come to life.
"This is my baby more, but the Oculus was something that I saw from the design, the storyboarding, the sound design, the beta version, all the way to what you see," he explained.
So, with the virtual reality game already created, could a video game coinciding with "Pacific Rim 2" become a reality as well?
"I think that's something that I would full and wholeheartedly support," del Toro said.
"Pacific Rim 2" hits theaters on April 7, 2017, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"I'm doing a little more location-oriented stuff, there are night battles, but there are also daylight battles," del Toro teased at Comic-Con. "We are expanding the mythology of the Anteverse. We are taking the characters into a completely different journey this time because Raleigh for me solved his problem the minute he was able to go full circle and save Mako [Mori] by sacrificing himself, which is what he couldn't do with his brother. He's not on that journey anymore. He's on a new journey."
