Hannibal Season 3: What Do We Know So Far?
"Hannibal" Season 2 ended with a lot of blood, rain, cut throats, and lots of major characters covered in blood. In the upcoming Season 3, the series creator revealed that there will be a time jump, less FBI interference, and returning guest stars such as Gillian Anderson, and Eddie Izzard.
"Hannibal" series creator Bryan Fuller revealed a lot more than expected at the recent Comic-Con. He shared that past characters of those who perhaps died, or survived, will be returning. He also revealed what will be the focus of Season 3.
Fuller spared no punches at Ballroom 20 where he and some of the "Hannibal" cast spoke. Fuller admitted to what happens next after the bloody Season 2 finale. [Spoilers!] After Hannibal (Mads Mikkelsen) attacked Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne), he found time to cut the throats of Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) and Abigail Hobbs (Kacey Rohl); and Dr. Alana Bloom (Caroline Dhavernas) was pushed out of a window.
There will be a one-year jump. Fuller admitted that telling the story a year after the murderous event makes it harder for viewers to realize who has lived or died, The A.V. Club reported. What Fuller admitted, however, was that Dr. Frederick Chilton (Raúl Esparza), Dr. Abel Gideon (Eddie Izzard) and Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier (Gillian Anderson) are all expected to make appearances in Season 3.
Fishburne has already confirmed that he will be returning to Season 3, and Rohl's Hobbs will also be making an appearance.
The location of "Hannibal" for the past two seasons took place in Hannibal's home, inside the sanitarium, in the forest, in Will's home, and it was heavily featured at the FBI. Season 3, however, would not take place at the FBI. And the whole "murder of the week" episodes format would be gone. The A.V. Club reports that Fuller has promised episodes filled with the search, hunt and capture of Hannibal.
Fuller has a plan, and it will reportedly include plots from "Hannibal," "Hannibal Rising" and "Red Dragon." But it might not feature the character Clarice Starling from the series, Variety reported. Fuller pointed out that MGM still had the rights to all of the "Silence of the Lambs" characters and plot lines, but Fuller and the show want to go to court so that they could use the characters.
Fuller loves Clarice. At Comic-Con, Fuller also spoke about his love for writing female characters; Season 3 will feature them heavily. In the past two seasons, the genders of Freddy Lounds (Lara Jean Chorostecki) and Dr. Bloom (Dhavernas) were switched from male to female, Variety reported. Fuller stated at the time that he wanted more female voices.
"I tend not to think about genitals when I'm writing a character, they're people first and foremost," Fuller said. "There's something unique about the female experience that I think has an accessibility and an emotional resonance... I find writing for women to be no less complicated than writing for men, because I look at them as individuals."
Adding that he was looking forward to seeing Anderson's Dr. Du Maurier and Lady Murasaki, Hannibal's Japanese aunt, in the upcoming season. Hold your breath -- the character of Murasaki has not been cast yet. Fuller admits that the show can do some more "interesting things" with female characters.
"Most of the female characters can see Hannibal clearer than the male characters... we're going to be exploring more of that in season three," Fuller said, Variety reported.
While in the last two seasons most of the episodes' titles were in French, Season 3 titles will be in Italian. Fuller hinted at that might be a clue as to where Hannibal will be heading.
The "Hannibal" fans, affectionately called "Fannibals," will perhaps be excited by these morsels of spoilers.
