Sixth Avenue was lined with red, white and blue flags.

Thousands of people turned out for the Dominican Day Parade in New York City.

"I love to see people enjoying the culture," said Emerito Beltran, of the Bronx. "You see a lot of things that you mostly see [in the Dominican Republic.] Personalities from there come here to have fun. It's a great day.

Henry Santos was the godfather of this year's parade. And Gov. Andrew Cuomo was cheered on as he made his way through the route. He was joined by City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said that 1613 brought the first immigrant settler in Manhattan, who was of Dominican descent while Cuomo added that the support for the parade has continued to grow.

"It's been growing and growing. I remember when this parade started, there were just a few people out here," Cuomo said.

He wore a sash that said, "Governor," on it.

Dascha Polanco of "Orange Is the New Black" was also present at the event.

Attendees were more than happy to talk about their culture.

"The people, they're loving people," Flatbush resident Lenny Reyna said. "We've got good hearts, we always help, we came here to work, we enjoy it here. Today's our day."

Hot weather wasn't enough to stop Dominicans from attending.

"I'm burning hot in this," said Alexander Brea, a 54-year-old resident of New Jersey. "But this parade means everything to me as a Dominican: motivation, energy, my body, my soul."

According to the U.S. Census, there are more than 670,000 Dominicans living in the state of New York.
