Fans of "The Newsroom" can look forward to seeing the ACN News Night team back on their TV screens next year.

Jeff Daniels tweeted yesterday that the news drama was picked up by for a third season by HBO: "It's official. #Newsroom coming back for Season 3." Daniels stars in Aaron Sorkin's latest series as news anchor Will McAvoy. "The Newsroom" is currently in its second season, with only two episodes left to air.

While HBO hasn't made an official statement, The Hollywood Reporter writes that HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said he'd be "shocked" if the series wasn't picked up for a third season. The reason for the delay is Sorkin, who is currently penning the Steve Jobs movie script, THR writes.

Since each season of "The Newsroom" has the team covering real-life events from the previous year, next season will have plenty of news to cover, including the Boston Marathon bombings in April and the Newtown School shootings that occured at the end of last year. The final two episodes of this season will cover the 2012 Election.

According to THR, the HBO drama has received high ratings and real news anchor viewers such as Brian Williams, despite being unfavorable with many TV critics. Lombardo spoke with THR in July, providing his thoughts on the show.

"It felt like the show was hitting a smart, adult audience that many of our dramas weren't," he said. "For a thinking audience, it's appointment viewing."

"The Newsroom" has been nominated for three Emmys, including Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama for Daniels and Outstanding Guest Actress for Jane Fonda. The HBO drama also stars Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, Olivia Munn, John Gallagher Jr., Allison Pill, Thomas Sadoski and Dev Patel.

The show hasn't been the only HBO drama making headlines recently. HBO announced yesterday that Season 7 of "True Blood" would be its last, airing in Summer 2014. Once "The Newsroom" is officially renewed, Season 3 will presumably premiere in Summer 2014 as well.
