The New York Film Festival has announced its main slate lineup, and this year a number of Oscar hopefuls will be making a stop at the prestigious event.

The festival is known for compiling the best of the year's biggest festivals and showcasing them in the main slate. Additionally, a number of Oscar contenders make a stop at the event in order to gain awards traction and buzz.

Meanwhile, Paul Thomas Anderson's latest "Inherent Vice" will make its world premiere in the centerpiece slot. That film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin.

Interestingly enough, the organizing committee has chosen to close the festival with Mexican film director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman." That movie is making its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival. The New York Film Festival usually leaves its closing night slot for a world premiere and usually has a huge gala screening.

A number of Cannes winners will be part of the main slate including the awards contender "Foxcatcher." That movie went on to win the Best Director award at Cannes and is also receiving a lot of attention for Steve Carell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo's performance.

The drama is likely to be a huge Oscar contender, and it looks to be Belgium's official selection for the Academy Awards.

David Cronenberg will also return with his latest feature "Map to the Stars." The thriller, which stars Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson and John Cusack, was met with mixed reactions at Cannes, but went home with a Best Actress award for Moore. The movie, however, is still generating a lot of buzz, and eOne Entertainment has already committed to releasing it in the U.S.

Also premiering in the Main Slate are the Cannes Grand Jury winner "The Wonder," the Cannes Competition films "Timbuktu," "Saint Laurent," "Clouds of Sils Maria" and "Goodbye to Language"

The festival will also show two Sundance flicks. The Grand Prize winner "Whiplash" will continue its festival trail and will continue to generate awards buzz. The film will become one of the few Sundance winners to be featured at this important event. The film stars Miles Teller and J.K Simmons.

The Tribeca release "Listen Up Philip" will also be featured in the main slate after having premiered at Sundance. The feature was hailed by most critics and is expected to be released in the coming months.
