Wal-Mart Runaway 2014: Texas Teen Secretly Lived in Store for 2 Days; How Did He Do It?
In a real realization of the Natalie Portman movie "Where the Heart Is," a Texas teen was caught living inside a Wal-Mart for more than two days without anyone noticing.
The 14-year-old ran away from home and camped out at his local Wal-Mart to try and avoid seeing his family, according to USA Today. The teenage boy, who has not been identified, was discovered inside the 24-hour Supercenter in Corsicana, Texas, after employees discovered his hiding spot.
The teenager had managed to stay hidden for more than two days -- eluding both customers and staff at the 200,000 square feet store -- but employees finally discovered the teen's two hiding spots in the store.
According to the local ABC affiliate, WFAA, a woman had reported her 14-year-old nephew missing some 54 hours before the teen was discovered inside Wal-Mart. The boy was living with her while his parents were away. He disappeared on July 28, according to a press release from Corsicana Police Chief Randy Bratton.
When the child's mother was contacted, she told police this had not been the first time her son has ran away. He has hidden in abandoned houses and business before, reported WFAA.
However, this time the teenager put some more effort into his disappearance. The local CBS affiliate reported that the boy had devised two hiding places within the store and tried his best to not raise suspicion, even going as far as wearing diapers to avoid using the bathrooms.
One of the teen's secret spots was in the store's baby section behind boxes of strollers, and the other was behind paper towels and toilet paper stacks. The teen even took a fish from the pet department and made it his pet.
