The nation’s gaze continues to fall on Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death of Michael Brown by a police officer. Conflicting information continues to cast a veil of confusion over the death of the unarmed black teenager and now the police have arrested reporters trying to shed light into the events unfolding in the St. Louis suburb.

Two reporters—Wesley Lowery from the Washington Post and Ryan Reilly from the Huffington post—were arrested on Wednesday in Ferguson by police, according to the Los Angeles Times. The two reporters were in a McDonald’s when police arrived and ordered them to leave, providing no reason as to why they had to decamp.

Before the police took them away, the reporters tweeted about the police entering McDonald’s before a Twitter blackout that ended once they were released, reports the Los Angeles Times.

Lowery continued explaining what happened in the police department, including the police’s refusal to explain why he was arrested and telling him the names of the arresting officers.

In an article in the Washington Post, Lowery explains the ordeal about how the police entered the McDonald’s, where journalists camped out because of the outlets and Wi-Fi, and told everyone to leave the building without any explanation. Police informed them they were arrested for trespassing in the McDonald’s, where they were customers.

Lowery continued explaining that the police arrested him after he was directed to one of the McDonald’s exits that was blocked by another officer.

“As I turned, my backpack, which was slung over one shoulder, began to slip. I said, ‘Officers, let me just gather my bag.’ As I did, one of them said, ‘Okay, let’s take him,’” explained Lowery.

He added that multiple officers began arresting him and he assisted in his arrest and told them, “My hands are behind my back. I’m not resisting. I’m not resisting.”

The officers answered with, “You’re resisting. Stop resisting,” reports the article.

Aside from arresting two journalists, the police in Ferguson also arrested Alderman Antonio French, who had been reporting on the events in the suburb, according to USA Today.

French’s wife, Jasenka Benac French, tweeted about her husband’s arrest, saying French was arrested for unlawful assembly, reports USA Today. The St. Louis alderman was subsequently released Thursday morning and explained what happened during his arrest, according to Fox St. Louis.

After police fired tear gas, French retreated to his car and rolled up the windows. Police then took him out of his vehicle and arrested him.

“I would call everyone in there a peacemaker, not a trouble maker. I saw some troublemakers and none of them were in that jail,” French told reporter Fox’s Chris Regnier, adding, “we broke no laws.”
