Ariana Grande: Singer Talks About Being a Child Star in Latest Billboard Issue
While gracing the cover of Billboard's August issue, "Break Free" singer Ariana Grande also opened up about her childhood, being a child star, and emerging as a successful recording artist, reports People.
Although the 21-year-old singer is often depicted as a dainty sweetheart, Grande admitted to being quite the opposite growing up. Grande described herself as a "very weird little girl."
"I always wanted to have skeleton face paint on or be wearing a Freddy Krueger mask, and I would carry a hockey stick around," Grande revealed. "I was like a mini-Helena Bonham Carter."
Grande then recalled the time when she scared her friends during her fifth birthday party which included a "Jaws" theme.
"For my fifth birthday party we had a 'Jaws' theme and all my friends left crying," she said. "I mean, I still am that way. But when I was little it was more concerning."
Grande's behavior concerned her family so much so that Grande's mom even thought her daughter "might grow up to be a serial killer," Grande said.
Luckily, Grande outgrew her "weird" phase and went on to star in her breakout role as Cat on Nickelodeon's "Sam & Cat."
But despite her success on the show, Grande explained that being compared to her Nickelodeon character in the past was "a little frustrating."
"For a long time I was attached to a character that was nothing like myself," she explained. "It was a little frustrating."
Now, with the success of her music, Grande is coming into her own as a recording artist. With various hit singles already under her belt, Grande will begin touring but she revealed that she prefers making new music in the recording studio.
"I have to launch this album, and I get to do a tour, which all sounds fine and dandy ... but I just love being in the studio. I could start a new album right now, tonight. That sounds the most enticing to me. I love it," she admitted.
