Gamers know Twitch as the most popular video streaming site, and early on Monday it was being reported that Amazon was in talks to buy the site.

Google was previously reported as buying the service, but Amazon reached a deal with Twitch, according to New York Times.

There was no information about whether or not the transaction had already happened, but the announcement was officially made on Monday afternoon. Amazon paid $970 million for the site. It was reported that Google was supposedly going to pay $1 billion.

Twitch allows users to stream their video games live, so people can watch and comment on someone's game. And if they want, gamers can have their microphones and cameras on so they can narrate what's happening.

In 2013, Twitch was a part of the Playstation 4's launch. It quickly became one of the more popular features on the console.

At the end of 2013, Twitch had 45 million users. The average time spent on videos was 100 minutes per day, according to the Guardian.

Users are very engaged on Twitch. About 25 percent stream their games, 38 percent watch video highlights and 61 percent interact with other Twitch users.

"When video game historians look back on gaming a decade from now, 2013 will be the year they cite as the tipping point of streaming," said Matthew DiPietro, the video president of marketing for Twitch. "Every major event, publisher, developer, and media outlet in the gaming industry had a presence on Twitch, and streaming became an ever-present piece of the gaming experience. And it's only going to get bigger."

Twitch launched in June 2011, and it came from Justin.tv, which is one of the first popular streaming sites for videos.
