Samsung Galaxy S5 vs. iPhone Ice Bucket Challenge: Samsung Nominates Top Rival in ALS Fundraising Campaign
Anyone who has been on social media in the last month would have found it hard to miss the Ice Bucket Challenge.
People across the world have been dumping buckets -- or whatever containers they have on hand -- full of icy water on their heads to raise awareness for ALS. The idea is to nominate others to take on the challenge in 24 hours or donate to the ALS Association.
So far the challenge has raised millions of dollars for ALS research. Many notable figures have taken the challenge, including athletes, former world leaders, industrialists and smartphones.
Smarthphones? You read that right. The Samsung Galaxy S5 has recently taken on the Ice Bucket Challenge and called out competitors, include the iPhone 5s, to follow its lead, according to Business Insider. You can see the video here.
"I am the Samsung Galaxy S5. This is my Ice Bucket Challenge," the phone said in a tweet sent out by Samsung right before the ice water cascaded over it. "Gosh that's freezing. I nominate the iPhone 5S, the HTC One M8 and the Nokia Lumia 930."
This, of course, is a clever marketing ploy by Samsung, as water-resistance is one of the main features of the Galaxy S5. None of the other phones nominated are water-resistant, meaning they'll have to skip the challenge and donate to the ALS Association.
"(This was) the perfect opportunity for the brand to do something that was meaningful but also unexpected," a U.K. marketing executive for Samsung said. The South Korean company also donated an undisclosed amount of money to charity as part of its challenge.
Apple has been rumored to be working to develop a water-resistant phone but has yet to unveil one in its product line, Apple Insider reported.
Prior to the challenge from Samsung, several Apple executives had taken part in the Ice Bucket Challenge, including marketing Vice President Phil Schiller and CEO Tim Cook.
