Time Warner Cable (TWC) customers nationwide were without Internet service early Wednesday morning for almost two hours. The east and the west coast were hit hard by the outage and up to 80 percent of Time Warner Cable customers nationwide were affected by this outage.

11.4 million residential customers of Time Warner Cable were without Internet Wednesday morning. Time Warner Cable has a customer base of 14.4 million.

It was said to be a problem with routine maintenance that caused the outage.

"During our routine network maintenance, an issue with our Internet backbone created disruption with our Internet and On Demand services," TWC said in a statement.

The outage first occurred at 4:30 a.m. Eastern time and was said to be mostly fixed by 6:00 a.m. Eastern time, the company said.

However, there were complaints from as early as 3:01 a.m. EDT and as late as 8:00 a.m. EDT from customers reporting outages.

Website downdetector.com reported the most outages occurred in the Northeast region, but there were also outages in big markets like Texas and Los Angeles, California.

TV and telephone services were unaffected by the outage, only Internet services.

This outage occurred just one day after TWC paid $1.1 million to settle a Federal Communications Commission investigation. The investigation reported that TWC failed to properly report several network outages last year.

"TWC (Time Warner Cable) failed to file a substantial number of reports with respect to a series of reportable wireline and Voice over Internet Protocol network outages," the FCC said in a report published Monday, as quoted by Reuters. "TWC admits that its failure to timely file the required network outage reports violated the Commission's rules."

This isn't good news for TWC who is trying to merge with Comcast. The merger would require FCC and Department of Justice approval and if news of outages and investigations continue to plague TWC, the merger would be difficult to complete.
