In "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart's directorial debut, the film "Rosewater" steers him away from his satiric mock of politics and the media and toward a harrowing true story. A new trailer was released that shows a brief version of Maziar Bahari's story.

Bahari, played by Gael Garcia Bernal, was a journalist covering the June 2009 Iranian presidential elections when he was arrested and brutalized by a man said to have smelled like rose water.

The clip shows Bahari leaving his fiancé, who appears pregnant, for a one-week trip. As the elections deteriorate into more and more chaos, Bahari is covering the scene when he is taken prisoner for suspicion of being a spy.

The trailer mixes clips of Bernal as Bahari and actual news footage, showing Bahari's struggle to remain hopeful through his dire situation.

"Your wife will never see you again," his captor taunts. "Your child will never know you."

Behari was freed on Oct. 17, 2009, and his daughter, Evin, was born eight days later. He now lives with his family in London.

The direction and the screenplay for the film both came from Stewart, having adapted it from the book "Then They Came for Me: A Family's Story of Love, Captivity and Survival," written by Bahari and Aimee Molloy. There are even real connections between Stewart and Bahari's journey; part of the reason for suspecting Bahari was due to the fact that he had appeared on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart."

"I don't think that Jon felt responsible for my arrest," Bahari said according to the Hollywood Reporter. "But I think he felt personally invested in the story because his name came up in a dark interrogation room in a prison in Iran."

The movie was filmed in Jordan last summer, over an eight-week break Stewart took from "The Daily Show."

"Rosewater" is set to be released in theaters Nov. 7, but will premiere on the big screen at the Toronto and Telluride film festivals in September.
