Iggy Azalea Talks About Her Real Name: 'Fancy' Singer Originally Turned Down Collaboration With Ariana Grande
This month, Australian rapper Iggy Azalea opened up about the creation of her stage name and almost turning down the chance to collaborate with actress turned pop star, Ariana Grande.
While appearing on Vevo's A.K.A. original series, the 24-year-old rapper revealed her biological name, according to The New York Daily News.
"My name is Amethyst Amelia Kelly, but you guys probably know me as Iggy Azalea," the Sydney-born rapper began. "And that's how it's gonna stay."
She thenthen went on to explain that her late dog inspired her stage name, Iggy.
"I had a dog called Iggy, who I loved very, very much," she said. "I got a name-plate necklace made in his honor. ... Everybody started to think that my name was Iggy, so it kind of became my nickname and I took it on board and started rapping with it."
Following her dog's passing, Azalea began rapping under the name Iggy. However, her grandfather suggested she take on a second name to fit her already existing stage name.
"[My grandfather] said to me, 'You can't have a one-word stage name,'" she said. "So I had to think of a good last name."
She finally settled on Azalea as her stage last name, "because that is a street name that my mom and family live on. ... And it sounds very feminine, and I thought it would balance out Iggy being so masculine," she said.

During a recent interview with Grammy, Azalea also opened up about another story regarding her career as a rapper.
The "Fancy" rapper revealed that she initially turned down the chance to work on a musical collaboration with Ariana Grande because of Grande's youthful and innocent look.
"She [Ariana Grande] reached out to me for her first album, and I didn't do it even though I thought she was amazing, because I thought she was much younger than what she is," Azalea said. "When I realised she was so close to my age, I was like, 'Wait you're an adult!'"
Azaela said, "I felt that my music was kind of so risqué and I knew she had a Disney show. ... I didn't feel like it was appropriate but then I actually met her and I found out that she's a grown-up and I was like 'Oh ,OK!'"
