PEDIGREE Dry Dog Food Recalled for Possible Metal Fragments in Bags
In an extension of a previous voluntary action, Mars Petcare, a subsidiary of Mars, Inc., is recalling 15-pound as well as 55-pound bags of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food products, due to the possible presence of a foreign material.
The voluntary recall continues to affect 22 15-pound bags shipped to Dollar General stores across four states, but it now is being expanded to the 55-pound bags, sold at Sam's Club stores in Indiana, Michigan and Ohio.
According to a news release from the United States Food and Drug Administration, the recall is being expanded to Sam's Club in the U.S. because some of the affected production lot was originally believed still in inventory when, in fact, the product had been released to consumers.
The company is confident "no other packages or retailers are affected by this recall."
The recalled bags of dry dog food may contain small metal fragments, which possibly may have entered the packages during the production process.
The metal fragments are not in fact embedded in the food itself, but could nonetheless present a risk of injury if consumed.
The company says consumers who have purchased affected product should either discard the food or return it to the retailer where the food was purchased, for a full refund or exchange.
So far, the company reports not receiving any reports of injury or illness associated with the affected product. The products indicated below should not be sold or consumed.
- 15-pound bags of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food sold at Dollar General stores will have the lot code 432C1KKM03 printed on the back of the bag near the UPC (23100 10944) and a "Best Before" date of 8/5/15. The affected products were distributed to Dollar General stores in Arkansas (Perryville, Cabot), Louisiana (Baton Rouge, Calhoun, Hineston, Jonesville, Pineville, Slaughter), Mississippi (Magnolia, Vicksburg) and Tennessee (Memphis).
- 55-pound bags of PEDIGREE® Adult Complete Nutrition dry dog food sold at Sam's Club will have the lot code 432E1KKM03 printed on the back of the bag near the UPC (23100 10731) and a "Best Before"date of 8/7/15. The affected 55-pound bags were sold between August 14 and August 30 at Sam's Club locations in Michigan (Comstock Park, Muskegon, Jackson, Roseville, Saginaw, Kokomo) and Ohio (Dayton, Holland, Lima).
