Roger Federer and Gael Monfils arranged a quarterfinal showdown in the 2014 U.S. Open tennis tournament after winning in their respective fourth-round matches on Tuesday in New York.

Federer moved closer to winning his sixth title at Flushing Meadows after scoring a convincing 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 win against Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain at Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens, New York.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion was hardly threatened on Tuesday night, feeling comfortable with his attacks for the entire match--where he had 35 successful trips to the net.

"I'm happy I'm able to come forward now because -- coming to net requires a lot of agility and explosivity and all that stuff -- and I have it back," Federer said via CBS New York. "I'm happy I'm feeling good at net, too, because you've got to anticipate some and read some and it's working really well. So I hope I can keep it up."

Monfils had a harder path to the final eight as he escaped with a hard-earned 7-5, 7-6 (6), 7-5 against seventh-seeded Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria in their fourth-round match.

The 20th-seeded Frenchman has not dropped a set in the first four rounds of competition, and he will look to sustain that momentum in the hope of advancing to the final of Grand Slam for the first time in his career, but he knows that it will be easier said than done against Federer.

"I think right now he's the greatest tennis player we ever had, and for me it's always challenging to play against him," Monfils said of Federer. "It's always great, because no matter what, you know; I will say to my children, you know, I played against him."

Marin Cilic also advanced to the quarterfinals with a five-setter win against Gilles Simon 5-7, 7-6 (3), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The 14th-seeded Cilic will face Tomas Berdych, who scored a 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 straight-set win against Dominic Thiem.

On the women's side, Caroline Wozniacki booked a spot in the semifinals with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win against Sara Errani. Wozniacki will face unseeded Shuai Peng of China, who defeated 17-year-old Belinda Bencic 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
