Kendrick Lamar Hot New Music 2014: 'Swimming Pools' Star Sued for Copyright Infringement; New Album On the Way?
Kendrick Lamar is being sued for copyright infringement on "Rigamortis" off his critically acclaimed 2011 debut album "Section.80."
According to TMZ, Eric Reed (drummer) and Willie Jones III (pianist) from jazz ensemble Black Note claimed that the Compton emcee's track used unattributed music from their 2010 song "The Thorn," which is featured on Jones' 8-track record "The Next Phase."
In the standout hit produced by Willie B and Sounwave, Lamar lays his verse over the sped-up version of the duo's instrumental track. According to the jazz musicians' lawsuit, the "B*tch, Don't Kill My Vibe" hitmaker took their music and simply added lyrics, insisting that "'The Thorn' isn't merely part of 'Rigamortis' - it is 'Rigamortis.'"
Moreover, Reed and Jones said that Lamar's song that undoubtedly features their rhythmic drums and powerful horns is basically what made the TDE rapper so famous. Since the pair never received any credit or pay for the music, they are now suing for "at least" $1 million, as well as seeking all "Rigamortis" profits and rights to the track.
Meanwhile, the "Poetic Justice" rapper is featured on Flying Lotus' "Never Catch Me," which was released on Tuesday. Also, he is expected to release his highly anticipated next solo album later this year, following the success of his 2012 sophomore record "good kid, m.A.A.d city."
Lamar previously revealed to Complex that he has recorded 30-40 new tracks for the forthcoming new album, as he is still in the process of "getting his ideas down." He also admitted that there is no cover art in mind just yet, and as for a title, he said he is "flirting with ideas."
