Jeremy Lin Must Outplay These 5 Guards to Make 2015 NBA All-Star Game
In a season that will mark change for both Jeremy Lin and the Los Angeles Lakers, the popular guard will be playing for the Lakers this coming NBA season.
Nobody knows how the 26-year-old Lin will fit in with Byron Scott's system, or how the Lakers will do next season. Lin is taking over a team that saw an 18-win drop off last year from 2012 and hopes to return to the NBA playoffs.
For Lin, another goal may be on the horizon -- making his first-ever NBA All-Star Game.
In the past two All-Star fan ballots, Lin finished among the top tier vote-getters among Western Conference guards, despite not having stats quite as impressive as his other counterparts.
If Lin can lead the Lakers to the playoffs, he may be able to make the All-Star game based on performance, popularity and value. It won't be easy, as Lin will have a lot of competition in a stacked Western Conference that features some of the best players in the game -- several of them guards.
Here are five notable point guards who Lin may have to outplay next season:
Chris Paul III
Paul is viewed as the best point guard in today's NBA. CP3 averaged a league-high 10.7 assists per game last year, while leading the Los Angeles Clippers to the No. 3 seed in the West. If Lin can outplay the best passer in the league, he will get a lot of votes from fans.
As good as Paul is, he has had a reputation for falling apart in the postseason. If the Lakers make the playoffs, we could see Lin and Paul face one another.
Russell Westbrook
Westbrook isn't the best passer, but his all-around game ranks among the best. His scoring abilities and never-ending effort make him one of the best point guards in the NBA. Playing alongside the best scorer in the league Kevin Durant doesn't hurt, either.
Westbrook is extremely talented, but injuries have been catching up with him. Having made the last three All-Star games, Westbrook may want to sit this one out, if elected.
Tony Parker
One of the most established, yet underrated point guards of the 21st century, Parker led the San Antonio Spurs to the No. 1 seed last season and the NBA Championship. Parker has made six All-Star games in his career, and the Spurs may not want him to play in this year's game.
If Lin can outshine Parker with Kobe Bryant's help, we may see Lin playing at the All-Star game. Winning in Los Angeles can make you a very popular player.
Stephen Curry
Curry is the best shooting point guard in the league by a mile. In 2012, Curry hit the most three-pointers in a single season ever with 272, and last year he hit the fourth-most ever with 261.
The Warriors aren't a lock for next year's playoffs, but Curry is almost a lock for his second All-Star game. It would be great to see Curry and Lin together with each other competing against the East at the All-Star game.
Ricky Rubio
Rubio might surprise a lot of people next season. The 23-year-old Spain-born point guard has become one of the best passers in the entire NBA. Rubio averaged an outstanding 8.6 assists per game last season, but his scoring isn't as much of a threat as Lin's is.
With Kevin Love now in Cleveland, Rubio may have some trouble adjusting. The Timberwolves and the Lakers will play each other four times next season, so Lin and Rubio will face off quite a bit in front of fans.
The 2015 NBA All-Star Game will be played on Feb. 15 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York City -- the same city that spawned "Linsanity" two years ago. If Lin could return to the city that made him famous as an NBA All-Star, it would be an accomplishment that he would no doubt savor.
